First Time Here

The pin marks a roadside pull-off on Route 30 at the end of the guardrail, immediately after the I-91 underpass when you are traveling northbound—not a designated parking lot. It is informal shoulder use only: pull fully off the travel lane if posting allows, keep sight lines clear, and be ready to leave if it feels unsafe or crowded.

A short informal trail—usually a visible worn path—leads from the pull-off toward the West River. Expect uneven ground: roots, dirt, and irregular footing before you reach the bank.

The river here is typically a wide section of the West River with shallow gravel and flat rock wading, a mix of shallows and a deeper channel, and a natural, undeveloped bank. There are no lifeguards, no posted depth markers, and no facility—read the water yourself and check depth before anyone commits past the ankles.

Should You Go

Good for

  • Swimmers comfortable with informal roadside access and self-rescue in moving water
  • Visitors who will match parking to what is clearly safe the day they arrive
  • People who check Conditions, then still judge current, footing, and depth on site

Skip if

  • You need lifeguards, a managed beach, or official parking
  • High water, fast current, or poor visibility after rain makes you uneasy
  • You cannot tolerate Route 30 and I-91 traffic noise and shoulder risk

Safety on site

This is informal river recreation, not a staffed swim area. There are no lifeguards. Current and depth change with weather and upstream conditions—including releases and inflows that affect the lower West River. Rocks stay slippery; test depth and footing before wading deeper. Supervise children within reach in moving water. Parking is informal roadside use only—never block travel lanes or the underpass. Verify posting and neighbor context the day you visit. This guide is independent and not a land-manager or legal source.
