Orientation to Dorset Quarry—a flooded marble pit with a long industrial past, now a seasonal swim destination under private operation.

Place & History

Dorset Marble Quarry is a well-known flooded extraction pit along Route 30 in Dorset, Vermont. Marble from this region was part of Vermont’s industrial story; today the water-filled pit is commonly used for swimming in season under operator management. This guide does not replace the operator’s website, waiver, or on-site instructions.

Land & River

The swim is in still quarry water, not a free-flowing river. Depth and bottom contours change with location; there is no USGS streamgage that represents this pool. Cold water is typical even when the air is hot.

Geography

Dorset sits in southern Vermont’s marble belt, west of the Green Mountain spine and within easy reach of Manchester for services. Route 30 is the main road corridor for reaching the quarry parking context pinned here.

Animals

Expect a busy human scene in season more than wildlife viewing. Still, songbirds and occasional waterfowl may use the edges—give wildlife space and pack out all trash.

Setting

Rock walls, ledges, and a mix of sun and shade define the quarry rim. Soil and vegetation are limited at the rim—footing is mostly stone, spray, and worn paths.

Stewardship

Managed quarries only work when visitors follow rules, carry out trash, and treat staff and other swimmers respectfully. Alcohol is prohibited by posted rules—plan refreshments for after you leave if you use them at all.

Local Context

What you saw in an old video may not match today’s waiver flow or hours. When the operator posts a closure or change, treat that as final.
